As preparation for Comrades 2012 and still being a relative newbie at the longer distances. What would your recommendation be for my 1st Ultra? Kosmos 3 in 1 has a total of 73.3km but with a couple of hours rest between the marathon, half marathon and 10km race or the Om die dam which is 50km. Would Kosmos be too much too early – is it more there for the seasoned Ultra runners?

As one of the helpers at Om die Dam I should not answer this one. Fact is at that time there are many ultra races on the calender and you just have to decide what mileage you need to do on the day..will you be fit enough to do the Kosmos well I reckon if you are fit enough to do Om die Dam then you will be fit enough for kosmos. I hear that is a very nice race and that it is easier to do the 70odd km than the ODD 50km

@Ant, so did you let Harties know that you will not be helping this year, lol.
Saw the flyer the other day at your place but still haven’t decided which one to do. ODD is closer but tougher you said

Dries I will burn that bridge when I get to it hee hee. I will either be helping or running at ODD. I regard myself as a social member of high standing at Harties so would not want to disregard them at any stage. The thing about ODD you either hate it or you hate it…i have yet to find anyone besides myself that loves this race.

I didn’t hate it! Although my one and only experience with it was that having left my home before 04h00 in the morning, not only did I get stopped at a road block because I happen to drive through a very popular night spot (you should see their faces when I stepped out in my very colourful running gear! Worth every second of it!), but by the time the start gun went off, I was still driving!
Biggest mistake was to try catch up to the group! It wasn’t fun trying to wade through the half marathoners who were just about ready to start and did not appreciate someone desperately trying to get to the front. All I wanted to do was to get going before being swamped by them!
Otherwise, even though I just about crawled in (learnt a huge lesson about starting too fast…), having passed Vlam early on and being passed by the huge 6 hr Vlam bus 5 km before the end, I enjoyed the route. The view was beautiful (running around the Hartebeespoort Dam), the terrain interesting but not too difficult, and the watering points well positioned. Pity by the time I get to the last few, the milk tarts were long gone!
I would love to do it again – probably have to leave at 03h00 to avoid the traffic! Maybe that’s why I entered but overslept and didn’t make it to the start line this year…….:-P

Dreamdoc thats a good summary of the race. I think many people make the mistake of leaving too late to this race as Hartebeespoort is in a valley there are just so many roads in and out so traffic will always be a bummer. Many people have taken to camping around the dam the night before to ensure that they are there on time. The other thing with the race is it starts with a gentle uphill then it goes gently down to the dam wall and then a climb all the way towards Komandonek and then its downhill and gentle to pecanwood golf estate and then a roller coaster ride to broederstroom and then down to the crocodile river where people then tend to surge only to be reeled in by the rolling pelindaba hills and saartjiesnek..if you rush up and over saartjies you will pay for it as you leave the milk tarts and meerhof and cross over into ifafi past that stoopid climb at birwood estates and then going through to schoemansville you think this is easy and the home stretch only to be greeted by Malanstreet whcich is really in bad taste so late in an ultra marathon and that leaves you hobbling the last 1km or so home

So the ODD is a month away from Loskop I reckon it will be an ideal long run then which should have you strong for Loskop

    How is the ODD half-marathon?

@philip well the ODD 21.1 is very do-able…I clocked a pb of 1:36 on it two years ago. it starts with a gentle uphill and then plumits down and flattens out between schoemnasville and ifafi where it has a couple of sharp hills through birdwood estate and then down to join the 50km route at the windmill you then follow the 50km route through meerhof passing the milktart waterpoint and then the hill past birdwood estates and on to ou wapad in ifafi heading west to the dam andthen you turn off of the 50km route to run up canon crescent which is relatively steep..you come down there and then you join the 50km course again which means you have the uphill of malanstreet to contend with in the last 2km before then heading downhill to the finish

Tx Anthony – you sound like a GPS… 1:36 is very impressive, luckily only for a selected few!
